In short, he wanted to know why he wasn't building any muscle - even though he was working out four to five times a week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I asked him where he got the idea that he need to workout that often, he replied that most the websites he'd been to all listed a whole range of exercises, and that he needed to work out that often in-order to make sure he was using at least half of them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now call me simple, but don't dare call me stupid. The whole point of working out in the first place is to build muscle - and lots of it. How anyone can figure that you need to make sure you are doing every exercise every invented to make worthwhile gains is beside me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you want to know the K.I.S.S. method to building muscle faster than you ever thought possible, with the least amount of exercises, then keep reading because you are in for a pleasant surprise.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here's the deal: Building muscle is more to do with intensity of effort, rather than the amount of effort. If you are working as hard as you should be to build muscle, than you don't need to perform very many exercises at all. That is of course if you are performing the best exercises for building muscle in the first place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So what are the best exercises for building muscle? Well they might not be the ones you think they are. Forget all the pumping exercises like dumbbell flyes, concentration curls, lateral raises and the like, and start thinking barbell squats, bench presses, and barbell rows. The plain fact is that a hard set of barbell squats will do more to indirectly increase the size of your biceps, than all the concentration curls you could do until now and the end of time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now get this - because not one in ten guys lifting weights today does. You are trying to build muscle, and to build muscle you need build strength, and to build strength you need to work up to using some impressive poundage in the basic exercises. Nothing else will do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you think I'm kidding about the need to increase the weight you lift in the basic exercises, than think again. Almost all the muscle you'll ever build comes down to progressively lifting heavier and heavier weights in the basic movements. Basic exercises work more than one or two muscle groups, and because of that fact they tend to stimulate a great deal more muscle growth as a result.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So don't get hung up on isolation movements. Especially if you haven't built up a foundation first. Focus on the basis exercises listed below instead:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    * Barbell Squats&lt;br /&gt;    * Deadlifts&lt;br /&gt;    * Barbell Rows&lt;br /&gt;    * Chin ups&lt;br /&gt;    * Parallel Dips&lt;br /&gt;    * Bench Presses&lt;br /&gt;    * Shoulder Presses &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These are the exercises that will build your physique faster than you ever thought possible - and here's why. Squats will stimulate growth throughout your entire body - and you probably won't grow at all without them. Rows and presses will build your upper body fast, and do more indirectly for your arms than all the triceps extensions and concentration curls in the world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You simply have to forget about making your workouts easier with pumping exercises so that you can workout more often without being sent to the emergency ward. Instead, focus on working out LESS, but making your workouts HARDER with basic movements, and heavier and heavier poundage. These days I walk in the gym, chat to the staff, say hello to a few of the regulars that I see all the time, Iâ€™m fit and I know exactly what Iâ€™m doing for a workout that day. This all came about by using progressive &lt;a href="http://astore.amazon.com/fitnessandyoga-20     "&gt;fitness goals&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;The first few weeks of going to the gym or starting a home workout are the hardest weeks. This is because your body is not used to the extra physical activity and you have undergone a whole lifestyle change. Most people blow it and take the easy option of giving up and heading back to the sofa with a pizza. As you are reading this I expect that you are not that type of person, you have my respect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To keep you on track my best advice is to start setting yourself some progressive goals and keep improving on those goals. This will keep you motivated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A lady emailed me the other day telling me that she was clinically obese and had no idea where to begin to &lt;a href="http://astore.amazon.com/fitnessandyoga-20     "&gt;lose weight&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Progressive goals are the way forward for her, my reply was the following:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dear Amanda,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Try this, go out the front of the house and look for the nearest tree/lamppost which ever is nearer. Run to the tree and run back again to your house.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Great you are done for today, read the rest tomorrow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Day2 Todayâ€™s task is to run to the first tree, then on to the second tree and then back to you house. You are done for today go have a rest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Day3 Run to the first tree, then to the second, now on to the third and run back to your house&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep this up and youâ€™ll be running marathons in a yearâ€™s time, keep building upon your goals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Take care&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pete&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hopefully my reply has explained to you what progressive goals are. Start with a small goal, make it achievable, go and do it, you will probably think it was easy. Next day go out and add a bit more to that goal, run a little further, cycle a bit further, lift a bit more weight. Make the goals easy and progressive. Fitness is only as hard as you make it, so make it easy for yourself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Decide on you ultimate heath and fitness goal. It could be lose a stone, tone up, build some muscle, run marathon, swim the channel, you decide its your ultimate goal. Now decide how you are going to get there, seek some advice on this if you are not sure email pete@petegriggs.com, start of small and build on top of that initial first step.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep this up and you will see yourself progressing workout by workout, it will give you a sense of achievement, you will start to feel really good about yourself and your whole attitude towards fitness will change. Youâ€™ll see it as easy enjoyable and fulfilling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Using progressive goals is a great way to start off &lt;a href="http://astore.amazon.com/fitnessandyoga-20     "&gt;exercising&lt;/a&gt;, it will keep you going through those first few tough weeks by giving you a feeling of achievement and make you proud of yourself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Like the saying goes â€œRome wasnâ€™t built in a dayâ€ it started with one brick and the rest of Rome was built on top of that one brick. But it is one of the few supplements out there that I consider a staple for just about everyone, no matter your goals. The long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that it contains are beneficial for your health, physique, and performance. Let's take a closer look at the benefits of fish oil.&lt;br /&gt;The Basics&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fish oil is made-up of a variety of fatty-acids, but the two that have gotten the most attention are the polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. These two fatty acids are thought to be responsible for most of the positive benefits of fish oil.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now before we delve into fish oil, I know some of you may be thinking that flax oil is just as good because it is high in omega-3s. The problem with flax and other plant sources of omega-3s is that they don't contain EPA and DHA. So when you eat flax your body has to convert the shorter-chain omega-3s into EPA and DHA. Unfortunately, our bodies aren't very good at this, especially as we age. To avoid this problem it is best to use fish oil as your omega-3 supplement instead of flax oil.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;History Lesson&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are many sources of EPA and DHA besides supplementary fish oil. EPA and DHA are both found in high amounts in animal products like wild salmon, grass-fed beef, eggs, and grass-fed dairy products. The problem is that these sources aren't consumed regularly by most people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thousands of years ago when human beings began evolving into what we are today these sources of long-chain omega-3s were plentiful. Since all fish was wild and all wild game was grass-fed, our predecessors didn't have to worry about taking fish oil. It's thought that the evolutionary development of our brains owes a great deal to this diet high in long-chain omega-3s, since the brain is made up largely of DHA.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Health Benefits&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fact that omega-3 fats once played such a prominent role in our diets, yet now are virtually excluded, may explain why fish oil has been shown to have positive benefits for nearly every disease out there. Indeed, if there was ever a cure-all, it seems that fish oil is it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Specifically, EPA has been shown to get incorporated into the cell walls of nearly every cell in your body. Greater amounts of EPA in the cell wall make exchange of nutrients and wastes easier, which keeps our cells healthier. EPA is also noted for its anti-inflammatory properties. This plays a huge role in joint and cardiovascular health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;DHA is known for its effects on the nervous system. Studies have shown that lower DHA levels correspond to Alzheimer's disease.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Additionally, fish oil has been shown to play a role in treating and/or preventing the following conditions: heart disease, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, Parkinson's, depression, ADHD, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and schizophrenia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Physique Benefits&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fish oil is known to stabilize blood sugar levels, which is helpful for anyone looking to lose fat. It has also been shown to increase your metabolism. I have found with many of my clients that a high daily dose of fish oil often results in the loss of 1-3 pounds of fat in one week, with no other dietary changes. This may be due to stabilizing blood sugar levels, increased metabolism, or possibly the incorporation of EPA into the cell walls which allows fatty acids to be released more readily into the bloodstream for energy. Whatever the cause, the bottom-line is that it works!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition to its fat loss benefits, fish oil is well-known for its anti-inflammatory benefits. This translates into fewer nagging injuries and faster recovery from heavy training sessions, which means more productive training sessions. This is what makes fish oil a great fast muscle building supplement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Summary&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As you can see, fish oil has a wealth of benefits. There are very few people who shouldn't be using fish oil daily. Check with your doctor to make sure that fish oil is right for you. The only thing worse than to spend months training and see little to no progress is to spend months muscle building successfully, and then have an injury set you back. As an aging lifter, I have come to appreciate and use a timeless method to increase my workout efficiency and aid in injury prevention. &lt;br /&gt;There is an old adage in weight lifting, â€œa long muscle is a strong muscleâ€. This is absolutely true. The term long is NOT meant that smaller framed people canâ€™t be strong. Long in this context refers to flexibility. The greater your ability to get your muscles to stretch as close to their maximum as possible, the stronger you can be. There is a definite connection between â€œrange of motionâ€ and how much power you can generate. And obviously there is a connection between how much power you generate and how much muscle you can build.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So everybody knows that stretching is good. Even novice lifters know to â€œwarm upâ€ and then â€œcool downâ€. But does this type of stretching ACTUALLY lengthen your muscles, which would in turn increase your range of motion allowing you to build even more muscle? Well, it can, if done properly. The problem is almost no one does it properly, relative to truly â€œlengthening the muscleâ€. Most people stretch until things feel â€œlooseâ€ and then they begin their workout. This DOES help in injury prevention, and I strongly recommend it, but NOT for increasing your ability to build more muscle faster. What kind of â€œstretchingâ€ does this?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yoga.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thatâ€™s right, I said yoga. Yoga is to stretching as weight lifting is to muscle building. You can build muscle doing only body weight exercises (of which by the way, yoga does for you), but you can turbo charge muscle building by adding â€œweightâ€ to your workouts. Yoga takes stretching to another level, and prolonged, continuous use, will actually increase your range of motion, and lengthen your muscles to the point where you can become stronger than you could have without it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I spend roughly 9 hours a week weight lifting. I â€œwarm upâ€ and â€œcool downâ€ for maybe a half hour of this time. I took an hour away from lifting , added a once a week yoga class in itâ€™s place, and after 3 months was able to blast through plateaus on the bench, military and leg press, that I had been struggling with for months. Not to mention the increased flexibility reduced some low back pain I had been experiencing and gave all my joints a greater freedom of movement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have plenty of gym rat buddies who scoff at my use of yoga and massage as a means of helping me build muscle. Sit and feel this for a few minutes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After you have settled and feel the realness of the sludge that you are caked with, take a deep breath and imagine you are outside and it has just started to sprinkle. Here you are covered in sludge and a warm summer rain has just begun. One by one and little by little the rain starts to fall on you. Their body is moving, their hands are busy, but their destination is unclear! Even when their actions apparently seem right, they show they're not fully aware of where they're going.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since they're not really sure of where they're going, they settle for something less than what they started after. Here's an example: You decide you need to get some area of your life under control. Maybe you decide you need to stop worrying. And, that's a good thing. That's a very worthy goal to pursue.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, you begin to read good motivational books, you listen to good motivational tapes and you're busy as you can be to get this worry bug under your foot. But, all the time you're doing this, there is a nagging thought in your head that says; "what if it doesn't work this time?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Rotten Apple Will Spoil The Barrel!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In affect, what you're doing is; tearing down worry on one side and building up fear on the other. If someone says to you, how are you coming along with eliminating worry? You say, "Yes, it's going great!" And then you say, but, you know I heard they are going to be laying off a lot of people at the plant and I'm afraid I may lose my job.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What have you done? You showed "worry" the door, and invited fear in to play footsy with you. And, believe it; fear will cause just as much havoc as worry. They both come from the bottomless pit, and have no business in our thoughts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Listen, even if they are going to lay off a bunch of people at your plant, you can't do a thing about it by fearing it or worrying about it. If it happens, deal with it then; NOT NOW!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And, don't tell yourself you can't stop worrying because it is too serious of a matter and could devastate your livelihood. !&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For Crying Out Loud!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you believe that then you're saying that nothing bad has ever happened to you without you first giving it a real good dose of worry before it happened.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I tell you right now; many lousy troubles have happened to me, right out of the blue, and I never spent ten seconds worrying about them beforehand. I didn't even know about them. The point is: if troubles are going to happen anyway, we need to know how to deal with them. They're like the proverbial "unstoppable object hitting the immovable object." And, then on the way to success, they stop somewhere short and settle for whatever is there at the time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most of the time, you can be relatively sure, it was some emotion that stopped them short. It was an emotion that started them and it will be an emotion that stops them. Emotions are a funny thing: They can fuel us with enough fire to leap tall buildings, and at the same time, make us feel like it won't happen until pigs fly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Fine Kettle Of Fish!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What a revolting development. What do we believe? What do we do? No wonder some people seem directionless in their pursuit of their goals. No wonder some people just settle for mediocrity in mid stream just to satisfy those conflicting emotions and shut them up. And, it's a pretty good way to boast success since we didn't follow through to see what would ultimately happen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm thinking of too many times in my life as a young man that I stopped in mid stream to take what ever was there and stop the feelings that kept saying; "if you keep going you might not get it; better take what you got now." You know that ole saying, "a bird in the hand?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I didn't want to hear that bird in the hand crap. My head said that to me so many times I was beginning to feel as lucky as the only man in a women's prison with a fist full of pardons. Talk about directionless; and settling for mediocrity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ah! That's Where The Rub Is!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The problem is: someone can get into a habit of "settling", and then that's the real source of the directionless and out of control life. As long as we live in this world, we will have opportunities to "settle" for something of mediocrity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The more we "settle" the more of a habit it becomes and the more we sub-consciously start expecting a "settling point." We don't think about it and we certainly don't start out with the intention of finding a place to settle. But, when it shows up, and the "bird in the hand" voices start their song and tap dance on our forehead, we say, I know when to hold em, and I know when to fold em, and its time to fold em.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The point is: it's not a bad thing to fold em if you can walk away ahead in the game. But, if it becomes an ingrained habit then the folding point will start showing up earlier and earlier till you find yourself folding right after the start.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Get To The Bottom Of It!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How do you know when to fold? This is not rocket science. It's pretty simple really. Ask yourself a couple of key questions. Can I walk away ahead? Has this thing given me something of value? And most important; has something else presented itself in my life that I can replace this with?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For me, if any one of these three questions are "no", then I'm not ready to fold em; especially the last one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Would you like to know why we settle for something less? This is not really difficult to understand but it might be hard to accept. So pay attention, and at least give this some serious thought. Don't let the simplicity of it get away from you. The reason is, we don't know "how" to fix it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If we knew how, we would keep going. If we knew what to do, there would be no need to settle. If we knew what was going to happen in every circumstance, we would not worry! We would never worry. Think about it.
